Springtime in Vienna
The calendar says May, but it's feeling more like November! Thank goodness I brought warm clothes.
Luckily the rain held off this morning as we headed into town for our walking tour.
Vienna is a beautiful city, whatever the weather, with lots of parks, boulevards, impressive buildings and statues. We walked through the Volksgarden , past the Imperial Palace, and through the winding streets of the old town. Vienna is a great place to window shop, and there are many different styles of buildings. We went into the Italian church with an impressive reproduction of The Last Supper, and of course into St Stephans, the "heart" of Vienna. A very beautiful Gothic cathedral. As in many European cities, the main shopping area is pedestrian only. It seemed quite busy, but apparently nothing like it will be in a few months! Several of us went for coffee and cake at a Viennese style cafe. I asked for the house special cake, called Anniversary Cake with raspberries and nuts - absolutely to die for.
We went through several arcades and narrow passageways before meeting our bus for the transfer back to our ship for lunch. I think everyone had soup today!
In the afternoon I took the opportunity to tour Uniworld's River Beatrice that was berthed nearby. I then did a brisk walk over to the Prater park to take a picture of the giant Ferris wheel. Definitely something that would be fun to do on a warm day. I guess I'll have to come back to Vienna, there is lots to see and do.
This evening we went to a Mozart and Strauss concert at a small hall; just for Uniworld guests. It was wonderful!
It's been a long day. Hopefully a good sleep tonight as we look forward to heading up the Danube.
